The following is a series of experiments with images I shot while walking the Poco Trail in Port Coquitlam, BC, a few weeks ago. I have always been fascinated by machinery, especially genie lifts that look alive to me. They look like some funny creatures, curious to see what's beyond. They also look like ostriches always wary of some predators around. While editing the photos I used my Nik digital filters. The original photos are shot by my iPhone. I'm trying to capture the moment, while exploring the possibilities offered by this gadget, as I don't believe the top notch technology in pro photography is necessary to achieve great results. You tell me what you think...

That "Green" Thing

Food for thought!! Anyone over the age of 30 should read this, as I copied this from a friend ..

"Checking out at the supermarket recently, the young cashier suggested I should bring my own bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. I apologised and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my... earlier days". The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations". She was right about one thing-our generation didn't have the green thing in “Our” day. So what did we have back then? After some reflection and soul-searching on "Our" day here's what I remembered we did have.... Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles repeatedly. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 240 volts - wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn't have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Wales. In the kitchen, we blended & stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right. We didn't have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then? Please post this on your Facebook profile so another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smarty-pants young person can add to this.."

I'm adding: This is so true. The world was way greener back then when there was no artificially created "Green Movement". Green was as green as common sense. I would add that as much as I'm all for "Green" and removing plastic from our civilization, I think the Corporations should be the ones to do it, not us. Why? They should hire some engineers to invent machines for sorting out the garbage and extracting plastic bags from it. And not only that, but composts and all other crap. Than they should buy those machines and help our economy. Then they should pay for people to be trained to use those machines. Then they should hire those people to do the work. We need more employed people, we need our economies stronger. Why should we spend all that time on sorting through the garbage when somebody can make a living out of it? The corporations want us to feel guilty and bad if we didn't do the work, because that way they get it for free. They can than keep firing more and more people so that their CEO's can keep making 170 times higher salaries than you and I! So hate me or not, I'm still using all my plastic bags!

Merry Christmas and Happy 2012!

I was walking in Vancouver the other day and entered the China Town, which is the second largest in North America. Close to the entrance there is a Chinese Cultural Centre, and a small gate into this garden. The garden has been just voted top ten (apparently the very first one) urban gardens in the world by the National Geographic. The day was gloomy, it started sprinkling again, but I nevertheless entered.

Walking around and taking pictures, I noticed two guys sitting under the rotunda, but didn't really pay attention. As I came closer, I heard the percussion and a flute. It was one of those everyday magic moments that make you fill with peace and content.

I hope the next year will be full of these moments in our lives...

Here is a collection of images from a trip to Victoria, BC, walking through the old downtown core. As some of my friends from across the ocean might not know, Victoria is located on the Vancouver Island, the biggest island that protects Vancouver from the strong Pacific Ocean storms and helps its unique micro climate which is very different from the rest of Canada. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia, and is a relatively small town with its own slower pace and character. I particularly like the old core which is not as big as Vancouver's but it's a bit more colorful.

01 Orthodox Intuition

One of my crazy moments. Experimenting with pure intuition in music. No pre-conceived arrangement. No knowledge. No skill in playing the keyboards. Just pure feeling and the moment. The spoken word is used from one of my very first CD-s I bought in Serbia, it's one of the first ever made in Russia. It's a collection of Russian Orthodox music. This part was a "song" with no music. Only the voice of a priest speaking. I find it mesmerizing so I had to through it in the mix. Only after I finished recording I realized this will have to come together with this voice. Somehow, my intuition has this Orthodox Christian sound... I'm still exploring it. I have more to come.

Jacky and Saki

I was digging through some old crap I should have got rid of long ago, and came across my old essays, journals, and term works from the Vancouver Community College where I attended College Prep English classes after I moved to Canada. When I moved to Canada in 1995 i didn't speak any English except some very basic sentences. They put me in an Intermediate Level class so I had lots of catching up to do, and there I started my journey. The College Prep classes started after about a year of basic stuff. Now when I read them they seem so funny and naive so I decided to share it with you so you can have a chuckle.

"Jacky and Sacky (now I know this should have been spelled Saki)

Jacky and Sacky were the best friends that I ever had (ah that drama!), even though they were very different in character. One distant freezing winter in my childhood, in a morning dressed in frost, when icy brunches crack under the gusts of wind, two black scared eyes curiously stared at me from the shadow of a carton box on my veranda, shivering and waiting for my reaction. (Obviously I was getting into writing really seriously!). At my friendly approach the eyes responded by letting out the rest of the black-gray hair of the body, slowly, step by step, in a big hesitation, as if that small, but robust body of a dog had been beaten by men too many times. Those eyes caught me forever because they talked. While he was walking up to me, still trembling, they begged me to allow that miserable appearance to stay in the quiet and the warmth of the house, and they were promising, too. What they promised me that morning I fully understood the same afternoon when a visitor came. At first, Jacky waited to see if the man would just pass by or if he will try to enter the veranda. As he showed the latter, from a seemingly indifferent, dreamy little doggy, Jacky transformed into a frightening gigantic monster all over the place.
Jacky never bit. But no stranger ever entered the house. And he had an incredible hate toward wheels too. No matter how many cars or bikes would pass in a day, all of them had to experience Jacky's madness. He would run with all his might directly into a wheel, hysterically keeping his barking cheeks to the tire, after which the car would speed up and disappear with its tail between its legs. Jacky would always come home trotting after the job well done.Only once he went sadly back to the house. After two years of my abandoning him, because we had to move to a condo that my family could finally afford, I was riding my bike through the former neighborhood. While I was approaching the house and thinking if I would see Jacky, he launched off the gate and ran into the wheels of my bike. Although I was quite disturbed I called his name. The first time he missed it, but the second he stopped, looked straight into my eyes, and recognized me! What I saw was a real exhilaration. He did everything that he used to do when he greeted me after school or every time if he hadn't seen me for a while. He jumped, ran in circles, took my hands with his jaws, licked me, all with uncontrolled sounds of happiness. And that was the last time that I left him. The last that I saw him too. It was to sad to be repeated.
Sacky was an even more incredible dog. Even though you could hardly guess her breed like Jacky's, she was surprisingly smart. But, she was eager to learn, while Jacky was an independent, almost obstinate dog. A reason for that could be that she was no more than a three week old pup when my mother found her lost on a street. Jacky was a mature dog who chose his owners by himself. However, just after we met, Sacky caught my attention by instantly bringing back a small thrown ball. She learned very fast all ordinary, useful things while living in a house with a yard. Jacky was never allowed into the house, but he hadn't have any interest in that. Sacky was quite a lady. If the door was closed, she would call me to let her out, and also she would knock to let her in. While Jacky had hunted for the wheels, Sacky was a much better hunter for mice and rats than any of the neighbor's cats. She would share with me every one of her successes in hunting (which admittedly, was not necessary). Oh, if only Jacky had done that with the cars! I can't remember I ever played with Jacky, but Sacky loved to play. She even had her toys. With one of them, she trained me to join in with her - it was a small blue hedgehog with a whistle. Her catching a ball became developed to the extreme of doing that with her front paws. She even new how to sing! She had learned that while I was tuning my guitar with a whistle. You should have seen the expression on her face while she was trying to mimic the sounds. It was an expression of a person absorbed in the effort. Every time that she spent sleeping, I watched her face and I knew she was dreaming. Then I could always see the face of Jacky in his carton box - they both had personality. But, contrary to Jacky, she was never in a rage. She was friendly to all people and all of them loved her. She never hated cars, not even when one had hit her and injured her leg. But her fate was similar. I had to leave her as I moved to a different city. Once more she proved how incredible she was. It happened after a year, when I moved back to my town. One morning I found her in the shed with twelve new born pups. She had escaped from my friend where I had left her miles away, came to give birth, and after a short time she left.
I knew then that she had matured for she had made her first decision, as Jacky had done it long before. I knew too, that I will never have a dog again if I have to leave them."

And that was apparently supposed to be a comparison exercise...

I was just fooling around with my new electric guitar and effects POD, and at the same time practicing so this is what came up. This is an old song from Biljana Petrovic from her album "Rock and Roll Dama" made in 1978... One of my favorites of course... I hope some people will remember it..

New video of my song Good Night.. Images are from a cruise to Mexico I did in February this year. The ship was a Mariner of The Seas and it was impressive. The song is a light summer song, and I thought the images fit well as they are cheerful and bright. Hope you will enjoy!

Pitt Lake Dikes and "Another Night Without You"

Two weeks ago I took a walk along the Pitt Lake Dikes in the Maple Ridge area. First we drove to Mission to check out a property which turned out a bit dissapointing, but the drive was quite unexpectedly a thrill. The weather was supposed to be dry till late afternoon, and we left Vancouver in a sunny mood. As we were approaching Mission, the clouds got darker and lower, and all of a sudden we were driving through a hail storm. The road was all white with marble size ice balls. On the opposite side the road was almost blocked by an accident - one car slipped in the ditch and everybody was slowing down to see what happened. The storm was going in the opposite direction, toward Vancouver, and as we drove through Mission, the sky started clearing up and the Sun was breaking through.

On our way back, just before Maple Ridge we cought up with the storm and drove through it again! Our original plan was to take a walk along the dikes and we were hoping that we will catch the dry sky. Our walk lasted for about 1.5 hours and we watched the same storm coming our way again. We made it to the car just as the first rain drops started, so we left toward Surrey. The storm eventually cought up to us and we drove yet again through hail as we were entering Surrey...

Probably because of the dark clouds and the drama of the moment, the images I took during our walk remind me of my song "Another Night Without You"...

The Oval

After more than a year after this building was built in Richmond BC (Greater Vancouver), I finally got to visit it a few weeks ago. Understandably, I was impressed, but it also felt great that I was working at the company that design it. I didn't have the oportunity to work on this particular project, but nevertheless, it felt special. This is one of my favorite buildings in Vancouver. It already won numerous awards throughout the world. It proved that poeticism in architecture is crucial in making memorable, meaningfull buildings. The idea for the design was based on the wings of bird heron, common in this area. The desing also incorporates native american motifs, and an ingenious use of wood in the structure of the roof, wood that would otherwise be lost (beetle infastation of North American forests). It's a building that makes it inspirational to be in the architectural field.

Bull Riding

A couple weeks ago I visited my first pro bull riding show. I always wanted to see it for the power and bravery of both the bulls and the cowboys. I couldn't use my semi-pro camera, so I ended up using only my iphone. However, what I got might be even better. I like the artistic feel of the movements, the painting effect of the shapes and colours. Here is a selection of what I thought are the best ones. The images are only cropped, everything else is unedited. I like the fuzzy look, it expresses the movement and the power much better...

Story about Children Of The Night

A friend accross the ocean has asked me to write about this song.

It's a simple love song I wrote many years ago about no particular person. It was one summer evening, I can still feel the breeze coming from the balcony into my haven room. The day was very hot, the sunset spectacular, the evening refreshing and inspiring, the night full of starts. In my writing I wanted to express this happiness at that simple moment with an imaginary person, when everything feels right, just the way it should be, when everyone who is listening would give their own face to that person. Later it turned, the imaginary person actually became real.

Every time I think about it the view of that evening is filled by my soulmate Vesna (translated from Russian - means The Spring).

Some years after I wrote the song I went to Beograd to study Architecture, and there I met one of my life long friends Vesna. She had (and still has) a voice of a divine being I'm convinced, and with it she touched me profoundly. My voice touched her all the same, and ever since, we live as one and the same soul. Literally. We still finish each other's sentences, we think about each other at the same time and often write emails at the same time, we know when the other is feeling down or having trouble. The telepathic connection between us has long become common, and does not surprise us.

We sung this song together many times, and only with her the song is truly complete. In fact, many of my songs are more complete with her voice. My original hope for the album was to have her sing all back up vocals. Unfortunately, it didn't work, but I still haven't given up the idea. The life got hard on her and she hardly ever sings anymore, but I know if we had some time together back there, she would be back to her old self.

This song is about this soulful connection that is most meaningful yet the simplest and most unconditional one there is - the friendship. With Vesna long ago I realized, and every day it's been confirmed over and over again, that the only lasting relationship in life is friendship.

Stronger Than Anything

Stronger Than Anything as performed live at The Vancouver Rowing Club with The Funky Orkestar's Timothy Van Cleave on vibes on March 04. 2011.

The story of this song begins long time ago before the death of the Yugoslavian president Tito. The country was in peace and the idea of "brotherhood and unity" was still strong. This idea is much similar to The Multiculturalism here in Canada, and perhaps that is one of the main reasons I love this country so strongly.

However, as Tito was growing older and sicker there were rumors of what Yugoslavia will become after him. The tensions between Croats and Serbs I was hearing at the time was growing stronger and I just couldn't believe it. For God's sake, my sister is half Croatian half Serbian! I always believed that we are all one and the same, we are South Slavs and I loved the fact that Yugoslavia had all those diferent cultures and places and dialects and religions. That I believed was what makes Yugoslavia special and unique and was proud of that. The rumors were however stronger and stronger and as much as I didn't want to believe it I recorded somewhere at the back of my concience that the war everybody was talking about could in fact happen. So at one inspiring moment I wrote this song under the strong belief that nothing can break what's right - and that is Yugoslavia as it was - a melting pot of cultures, the richness of humanity in itself. It does not matter what culture we are, what religion we follow, what colour our skin is, what sexual orientation we have. The strength of humanity is in unity - not in separation.

Also, the song was about the power of good against war as the ultimate evil.

The original lyrics in the chorus were saying: "... We are so much stronger than them, the soldiers don't have the power for breaking us..."

The war eventually really happened, in spite of my naivity. Needless to say, it was a real low kick I and majority of people on the Balkans could hardly survive! The population is emotionally wounded and you can still see it on people's faces. It felt as though the evil is winning, but the song was still going strong. A couple years ago I reconnected with a girlfriend of mine who I was very good friend at the time and who I sang this song in a duet with. She moved to Bosnia before the war, and after the war she moved back to my hometown. I could only imagine what she was going through. When I sent her the link to my website and the news about my new CD, she sent me an email saying : "I'm so happy you included this song on your album. The whole time througout the war I was singing it (with the original lyrics) and I trully believe it helped me through the whole nightmare!"

Aside from that, in my own personal turmoils in the years after I moved to Canada, this song really helped me go through it all.

Today, it looks like the times are the hardest as they ever were. The circle is closed. We will always need songs like this. The vibraphone player Timothy Van Cleave I was lucky to meet and now play with said to his followers and friends: "Take a listen. This song migh change your life". What else should an artist expect? I am the happiest guy on earth, and hope more people will feel the power of this song.

And in spite of everything, I now know that the war in Yugoslavia didn't happen because most Croats hated Serbs because of their religion, nor because muslims in Bosnia hated Croats and Serbs. It was a doing of highest political will of the world that took advantage of the extremists on every side in Yugoslavia for globalization and economic imperialism. It was also the fastest way to switch from "common property of communism" to "private property of capitalism" and have a small corrupted group of people in power become reach beyond belief!

I still hope and strongly believe, and in fact I'm sure that the good will prevail and that we are in fact stronger than anything! It always is althought at times it might seem the evil is stronger. My feeling about Yugoslavia, for example, is proving every day. The Balkan countries are still very dependent on each other and normal people deeply feel the connection that still exists and is growing stronger. I'm looking forward to seeing what form this will take in the future.

The good is stronger than anything!

Triangle Beach, Off Road Playground

Sometime in November last year, the leaves were still on the branches, we took a drive and than a walk looking for this hidden beach in Richmond, BC we heard about from a friend. We tried once already, but missed it. This time we got it the right way, and we were up for a surprise: this is a playground for off road driving, dirt biking, sand driving and such. We couldn't believe our eyes. It's just off Steveston Highway practically behind the Silver City Theatres. It's nothing too spectacular, but having a place to play with your motor bikes or off road vehicles right in the City is kinda cool. These are the images I got at the place. It was fun.

The first few images are from our walks prior to finding the beach. We first ended up going the opposite way.

It's always fun when you don't quite know where you are going and what you are gonna see.

After a small industrial complex, there was this open field waiting to be discovered...

Judging by the picture, you would never tell it is in a city, although it's right in an industrial area of Richmond.

Pitt River Dikes

Last Saturday we took a walk along Pitt River dikes starting at Mountainview Kennels. It was a beautiful sunny winter day too great to be wasted spending inside. Pitt River is a tidal river undecided weather to contribute to the Fraser River or not. It sort of changes the flow with the tides. I find that fascinating. Even more fascinating is the fact that in my 15 years in Vancouver never ever I heard anyone mentioning it! C'mon people! It's a rarity! It's unique, it makes us special on the world's nature map! Call me crazy, I still can't get over it. The river feeds into the Pitt Lake, one of only two fresh water tidal lakes in the World! On top of that, the walk gives an awesome oportunity to enjoy the Golden Ears Mountain, my favorite around here. Its majestic nature is most prominent at sunset when it begins to glow in shades of gold! This was the first time when I learnt that each peak has a special name...

We started our walk along a narrow branch of the river. The fact that the trees were naked uncovered a unique face of this area.

I like peopleless roads, pathways, dikes...

One has to pay close attention to discover all the colours that are there in a seamingly colourless surrounding... And there is so many...

The peaks are gently brushed with a touch of snow...

I don't know for sure if this was particular to BC or the fact that I'm older and more observant, but there is something about the textures of the branches and grass in BC that keeps fascinating me over and over again...

Subtle shades of passion...

Minnekhada Sleeping (Merry Orthodox Christmas!)

My Christmas lights are still on! According to the Orthodox Christian Religion, Christ was born on January 07. and under that impression I was living for over 30 years back in former Yugoslavia. The Catholic half of that now non existing country was celebrating it as you know on December 25. My confusion and a mild resentment toward both churches was even than present. I mean, how can that be? How is that possible that the two churches couldn't agree on the date of Christ's birth? The only answer I came up with was: for political reasons! And now, if the two churches are still wondering why they are losing on the number of followers, perhaps they should start with this!

However, I love Christmas lights, so ever since I moved to Canada, I commemorate both! It's happier that way. But my God is somewhere else: in Nature. There is only one God that speaks through Nature and that's the one I follow. And It does not care about birth dates!

I found It again walking through a park in Port Coquitlam, BC (part of Vancouver, BC - practically in the city, as many...): In Minnekhada Regional Park, around Minnekhada Lodge, where the marsh and a pond were asleep in a frozen embrace, while the Sun was brushing their hair over the tree tops....

We walked from a dry parking lot downhill for about quarter mile to the frozen lake, through a hollow about less than 10 feet in elevation difference, but in there everything was frozen! Above, at the tree tops, you could see the Sun rays brushing the tops half way down the tree trunks - and than: frost magic!

The ice was about 3 inches thick, but in some areas, where it was thinner, when a skater was passing over it, you could hear ominious sound as if a steel wire was vibrating through the air...

In the shade, all is frosty - the sunny side dry and warm!

Simply: Magic!

Rice Lake Magic (Happy New Decade!)

A new decade is here! The 2000th seams only a few years far... Time flies... A friend of mine told me she hates this time of year: It reminds her on all the things she hasn't accomplished and all she missed and could have done... To me it's the most important time of year!

I was never too religious, except in a brief period of religious reawakening in former Yugoslavia after the colaps of Communism, but even than organized religions didn't quite cut it for me. Spiritual I am - deeply. Especially after I moved to Canada, seeing all those churches on every other corner representing a different shade of interpretation of The Bible just killed it for me. No offense, it's too much of a business like venture! I do respect the fact that people need to gather around some beliefs and that's cool. I personally don't think we all need to belong to a church in order to believe in God, whatever it is. But I deeply believe in universal order with Nature as the main connection to it.

This also got enforced in me after experiencing the natural beauty of British Columbia, and Canada at all. There I feel totally connected with that ultimate power we call God. So this time of year is only a natural progression from an old year with whatever I have accomplished, into a new year as a new chance, new opportunity, and I always feel energized, recharged. I felt the same on Saturday, taking a walk around Rice Lake at the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve (LSCR) near Vancouver, BC.

This is an early form of forest transportation which used to be with running water where loggers would jump in and slide to a lower point. Hop on and enjoy this magical little lake under thin layer of ice...
And... Happy New Year with lots of dreaming!

Sky Over The Serpentine River

Merry Xmass and Happy Holidays!
I love British Columbia's sky, the clouds can say so much and help make daydreaming an inspirational experience. I walk a lot, and walks to me are not only phisical activity, but more so a meditative, spiritual adventure. My best walks are in areas not much advertised and popular, hidden places with hidden beauties are the most exciting. My favorite outdoor activity is looking for such places.

The Serpentine River is a lazy quiet river that seams to appear out of nowhere through the fields of rural Lower Mainland, south of Surrey. You can easily drive by not giving it a second look, not even the first.

But there is the catch. You got to stop and look. You got to feel it and walk it. The quiet lazy water is hardly moving. It radiates peace. I can feel it's energy, so soothing. It reminds me on the rivers in Panonian Plains in the Serbian north.

Of course, Nikkie is always happy to explore.

The little unassuming park is nestled somewhere between Surrey and White Rock, in an undefined area of fields where most drivers never look around or even bother to stop.

Some fishing enthusiast and walkers in the area obviously know about it, but the place is extremely quiet, a heaven for meditation and slow spiritual excercise.

The sky was the only thing that was giving the passion to the undisturbed waters. Or, maybe the river was mirroring her own hidden passions?

A little island, lovingly shaped by the force of meditation? There is no water movement, how can the shape be so artistic?

A friend was telling me about Saskatchewan and how borring it is there in comparison to the BC nature. I would love to see that because I think it could be as dramatic as BC with a picture like this!

To me this is a diferent kind of spectacular! It's sublime, refined, not-in-your-face, yet as powerful as it can be!

I'm carying so many songs in my head and my hart walking through the spaces like this. I feel humbled, and not worthy of even giving it a try to put into a melody. No melody can match the Nature's Harmony...

At the moments like this I wish I can go back in time when life was so much slower, take my palette, paints, and my guitar and spend hours and hours breathing and capturing the beauty...

I can't but think of Flaman's masters of the Renessainse. There is something of that time captured in the spirit of this place...

... And like so many times before, the nature never stops surprising you here in BC. In one hour of our walk the sky changed from gray to happy.

The Sun started to peak through the clouds, but only just a little, only slow, in perfect unison with the scenery...

The dry grass is starting to wake up. The dull yellow is becoming alive again! Like an ouverture to a crescendo!

The many little pockets of overflown water are showing up here and there...

It's actually 6 feet deep!

And then - the finale! I can't get enough of the texture of grass here. It always reminds me on a perfect arrangement around a strong melody!

It feels like another day has started after we turned around a corner...

Bright and happy, brilliant, alive!

There is something so special about West Coast colours...

... and Nikkie is pooped. Mike is giving her the clean up before she jumps onto the back seat and crashes! Enough of this philosophical crap. I need to sleep!

Magic After The First Snow

Well, the snow was there for the night and a bit of the next day. Nikkie had fun. But that was it. One more good thing about Vancouver is the snow never stays long, and there is never much of it...

In the morning it started melting and soon it was all gone.

By noon there was no trace of it...

The next day was sunny again. Those days are something to experiance. It's simply magic. You got to experiance it to understand it. After the gloomy rainy days, or snowy like that night and the next day...

First Snow

The snow came earlier this year. I didn't believe the forecast, they usually miss. Not this time. It started blowing, and in half hour everythng got covered in white. It always brings fond memories. I love watching the snowflakes riding the wind from the wormth of my home. It feels safe, protected. Not sure what it is. Must be the child in me...

Today was another of those stressful days at work. I hate deadlines on Fridays, but they always seem to sneak in. It'\s as if everybody wakes up on Friday morning and everything needs to be done the same day! So around 3 pm when we got the job done, I took a short walk around my work neighborhood. I've been watching the trees along the street slowly changing colors in the past couple weeks, but today it felt special. The sun was playing with the clouds and turning the tree tops on and off all day. As I walked, I realized the trees were slowly turning from orange to red. A little "ordinary miracle" was unfolding in front of my eyes and steps. Take a walk, enjoy....

Finn Village and the Indian Summer

Octobar has been pretty bright so far. The indian summer is going well. After the usual walk with Nikkie along the South Dike Trail in Richmond, we decided to enjoy the sun even further. At the very end of the trail, as you exit on a paved street, there is a little island awaiting, and something like a small marina.

There is ol' Eva wating too...

The Finn Village begins out of nowhere. Usually, you will see at least one photographer there. The village is small, but picturesque.

It reminds me on Cigan Mala's (Gypsy Quarters) in Eastern Europe - North American version. This is as close as it gets in polished Vancouver.

Some say this is squaters haven. Some say it's an art community. It's definitelly full of hippies....

It's so well hidden, I wouldn't be surprised it was ignored and forgotten by most, except artists.

Falling appart. It's such a contrast to the rest of the city, it's almost a releaf. Relaxing, care free.

I wish a had time to spend drawing and painting it. It's perfect. Now, the photography is the best tool to fit the busy scheldule. More and more, it's with my iPhone. It brings the message accross, at least for this medium...

Urbanity - a sunny walk on my lunch break

As usual, I like exploring my new surroundings. I changed offices in September and although I more or less know the area, I like walking around to actually feel it. A famous Serbian architect Bogdan Bogdanovic, my professor at the university (yes, I'm very proud of that!) wrote in one of his books something like "The cities are best explored by foot". Every time I walk in cities of the world, and my own (Vancouver, Belgrade, or Jagodina or any other), I remember that sentence. The human speed is walking, it directly relates to the experiance of the space one is walking through, and gives the best interaction between the soul and the urbanity. This also of course applies to nature, but \I will blog about it next time...

I walked down the street to False Creek, a supposedly mysterious body of water in downtown Vancouver near Sciency World. I was biking around there when I used to live around Commercial street, it was a pretty ugly industrial pile of rubbish. I was thinking back than I hope one day this red building will be renovated, and I'm so happy to see it standing, although converted to some retail space I believe.

The view across at the construction of the new roof on the BC Place stadium. The new multi family residential development was the Olympic Village for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Very controversial...

The new pedestrian / biking bridge is at the same place where there used to be a run down heavy timber bridge.

Ity reminds me on the London bridge, just a bit....

The water is much cleaner now. Another perfect afternoon for taking pictures and daydreaming...

A water feature in between the two buildings of Arthur Erickson. They are the last project he had done before he passed away. One of my most favorite architects! I'm proud I'm a Canadian because of him, among other things....

The building is seamingly simple, but on a more closer look there is a touch of an artist there...

I love the colours the light was giving today. The little park at the end of the complex is a bit unique, however, it doesn't feel like it settled yet. Looking forward to checking it again in a few years.

Another bridge in semi industrial look. The whole complex looks a bit too new, it hasn't started living in this area. It will happen over time. Maybe the reason is also a bit of a cacophony of styles.

The pond has an elaborate system of irrigation.

Then, on my way to skytrain after work there is another look at the BC Place Stadum. I'm getting used to it, although I was not in favour of removing the old pillow....

And than back to the skytrain on my way home. I really enjoy the ride from the Waterfront Station. Skytrain is very relaxing to me, my meditation place.

And, the sunsets are pretty good too...

Status Symbols

It still floors me how many people are stuck with these symbols, like today talking with a couple people I met. They really believe that they are better then others if they live downtown or in so called "elite" areas, and suburbs are low and by definition not worthy. I guess they think so because the society labeled those areas as "elite"! They also believe that their salaries give them the rights and power above others, and more than anything they identify themselves with the brands of their cars and stuff they buy! I wish I could just close my eyes and ears when I see this. I feel like screaming you ignorant superficial bastards! But, I won't because I'm polite. I mean, it's ok to be successful and be paid well, and have a good car and house and stuff, but please, that doesn't make you better people. There I said it. Judge me.

Perfect Day

In Vancouver you have to act quickly. When you see the sun outisde, you gotta run! If you don't the rain might sneak behind before you put your shoes on!

A perfect day in urban life must be Saturday like yesterday. I was hoping it will be, but it turned out to feel again just like summer. I hung my bike at the back of my jeep and flew to Richmond for a brunch with a friend and his dog Nikkie. Nikkie is a very special dog. She is my weekly shot of unconditional love!

When she sees me she starts crying in excitement. Her tail is beating hard left and right. She is adorable. It was a hot day for this time of year, so we left her in the house while we went for a brunch.

So she waits...

The usual for me: scrambled eggs with hashbrowns, brown bread. I was missing it so much on my trips to Europe in the last years. I love it because it feels like a home made breakfast from my childhood! Old sentimental fart!

After that we picked up Nikkie ever so excited, she knows where she is going - to her favorite park.

It's along the Fraser River, a 45 minute walk total, lots of dog lovers walked by their four legged masters!

A short stop to her favorite sand pit! Today she was a bit lasy, it was hot and she was looking for shades. Still playful...

That cold shaded grass feels so gooood!

We then went for a bike ride along Shell Trail. Nikkie stayed home becase she has a fobia of this tunnel like trail. She is strange that way. We are still trying to figure out what is it exactly that scares her.

I love biking in Richmond. You can go all around the dikes for hours around all Richmond! And, it's all flat!

We got to the river at the end of the trail. The clouds were coming already. They said it would rain but the day was so gorgeous you would never think. But, here it was as usual...

When we got back, Nikkie was thrilled to see us, although we were gone for only 45 minutes. She did her loving ritual with the grass...

She played with her favorite "Interractive Ball". But then she was looking for a bit of lovin'. A back rub.

The Fall

It's arrived! The gloomiest day so far this year as far as I remember. The rain is soaking you wet in seconds, it got dark early, it's cold... But I'm not depressed. This is the most creative time of year for me. I'm looking forward to the evenings with raindrops tapping over my roof while I play music, or write this. It's dry inside, it's safe, it's meditative.Rain always reminds me of how I've come a long way: when I was a kid every pair of shoes was full of holes, my feet were always wet. Today they are sometimes wet but it's for fashion! I guess it's not a long way after all...

I used to write diaries, essays, everyday thoughts inspired by events, people, and scenery that surrounded me.Life than interrupted all of that for quite some time. I still write songs and poems but never thought of blogs as a form of expression. I guess it's time to start. My blog is primarily about my music, but everything that surrounds me and happens to me or even my friends or family one way or another influences my outlook on music and my inspiration. So I will start writing my day to day thoughts. Just like back than in high school... You can call it just another form of middle age crises, that's ok too.
Today I took a long walk to the skytrain station on my way home from work. I needed fresh air after a stressful day, and like every time it made me feel so much better, recharged! Near my new office is Cambie street bridge on one side overlooking the new Olympic Village, and Science World sphere under renovation still looking space age like, under dramatic gray-blue clouds. I walked by the BC Place stadium under reconstruction of the roof, with some impressive structural mastst holding the cables for the future largerst suspended roof in the world, so they say... Still impressive. A few minutes more and I ended up near the recently completed Woodword building, quite unique in its mixture of old and new. Very artsy. I love it.
Things like that relax me. Daydreaming in its best. Architecture and Nature are my daily dose of dreaming! Like always I took a bunch of photos. Tomorrow is the first practice session with my new band member Alex (Alex Milojkovic). I'm really looking forward to it. It took a long time searching for musicians in many places. It so happened Alex lives in my own building! He plays piano, the guitar and sings. Our first intro session went well and I think we can work well together. I hope my first instinct will prove right. I'll keep you posted.

Tonight I was interviewed by an internet radio station show "Behind the Mike". It was great, great people, good questions, it was so much fun! They played my song "Sonny". It was awesome to hear it in that anvironment and knowing that thousands of people are listening!
